Comthago VDL is a son of the Grand Prix stallion Comme il Faut, himself a son of Cornet Obolensky and bred from the legendary mare Ratina Z. Through the damline, Comthago also brings the valuable blood of Carthago and Caretino. His dam jumped 1.30 m and his grandam Joyce I competed internationally at Grand Prix level.

Comthago himself has proven to possess exceptional jumping qualities. He combines a powerful take-off, plenty of scope and good technique with carefulness and a modern canter.

Under Hessel Hoekstra, he achieved a silver medal at the Dutch championship and a victory in the Grand Prix of Ommen, among other results.

Comthago is also making his mark in breeding. His oldest offspring are now performing at international level, with multiple progeny jumping 1.40- 45 m.
